Maximising Space: Clever Nook Solutions for Small Bedrooms

2 minutes, 24 seconds Read

The number of bedrooms in the average UK home comes just shy of 3. That’s nearly three spaces per household that are probably in need of a refresh – and nearly three bedrooms per household that probably aren’t getting one any time soon.

Your bedroom will often play second fiddle to other rooms in your home, and especially so if it’s small. While your bedroom may not be your favourite place to be, it could become such as a space with a little smart redesigning. If your small bedroom is giving you some heartache, what are some clever ways you can maximise the usefulness of its most awkward spaces?

Cosy Reading Retreats

The instinct when thinking about an awkward bedroom nook is to make it into a cosy bedroom nook – specifically, a reading nook! Reading nooks are a great addition to a bedroom space, particularly for ensuring that your bed remains purely for rest and sleep (something which scientists are largely aligned on thinking can be beneficial for the quality of your rest).

Creating a nook is as simple as adding a seat, a light, and potentially a shelf for books and other esoterica. A built-in bench is a good solution here, allowing you to build your seating directly to the proportions of your available space. An overhead reading lamp will illuminate the space favourably, and make it practical to boot.

Multi-Functional Storage Solutions

In acknowledging the possibility of built-in furnishings above, we’ve also unlocked the potential of multi-functional storage; your reading nook chair could double as a trunk for storing bedding, for instance. There are many options here, and the sky is practically the limit! For example, installing fitted wardrobes gives you a more cohesive finished space, and could contain a fold-down desk within them to create a neat, modular vanity area.

Compact Home Office Corners

Speaking of desks, it is altogether more common for us to be working from our bedrooms since the remote work revolution – something which is especially true for people with smaller homes, and who do not benefit from the luxury of a spare or box room they can turn into an office. Folding desks are great for creating working spaces that don’t permanently cut into your room, as are wall-mounted organisers like pegboards. Ergonomics are key here, so make sure you choose your seating and desk height carefully!

Stylish Vanity Areas

Finally, it’s worth considering the vanity area in its context, outside of being a clever part of your wardrobe set-up. There’s far more to bear in mind than saving space, after all – with ‘feel’ being a key element to any good vanity nook. Think dusky purples and blues against which to set off localised task lighting, or using contrasting textures on the wall and in the desk to draw the eye!
