With a deep love for travel and a keen interest in discovering new cultures, exploring the world has become one of my greatest passions. My journey into solo travel began when I planned my first solo trip to Paris. Fresh out of graduate school, I was determined to see the world. As a college student on a tight budget, travel was out of reach. However, once I secured my first full-time job, I saved diligently and eventually made my dream of visiting Europe a reality. I was eager to see all the iconic attractions in Paris and decided I would go alone if necessary.
Since that initial trip to France, I have explored over 26 countries, traveling solo to many fascinating destinations such as Oslo in Norway, Stockholm in Sweden, Lisbon in Portugal, and many more. If you haven’t embarked on your first solo trip yet, don’t worry. Soon enough, you’ll be confidently navigating new places on your own.
Tips For Getting Started as a Solo Traveler
1. Start Local
My first solo trip to Paris was inspired by the desire to explore, despite having recently watched the movie ‘Taken.’ In this film, Liam Neeson plays a father who embarks on a relentless quest to find his daughter after she gets abducted in Paris. While this scenario is a nightmare for any traveler, the idea of traveling alone for the first time didn’t frighten me. However, if the thought of traveling alone makes you nervous, you can gradually build your confidence by starting local.
Begin by attending local events on your own. This could be something as simple as catching a movie alone, dining at a restaurant by yourself, or going to a concert solo. These experiences help you get used to the feeling of being on your own in a social setting. Another excellent way to ease into solo travel is by taking a short weekend trip to a nearby city or tourist spot.
For example, if you live near a popular destination like a national park, a charming town, or a beach, plan a day trip or an overnight stay. This way, you’re not too far from home, but you still get the experience of navigating a new place by yourself.
Starting local allows you to test the waters and understand what it’s like to travel solo. You’ll learn how to enjoy your own company, make decisions independently, and handle unexpected situations. Do this a few times, and you’ll build the confidence needed for your first longer solo trip.
So, take those initial steps close to home. Gradually, you’ll find that traveling alone becomes less intimidating and more of an exciting adventure. Before you know it, you’ll be ready to explore destinations far and wide on your own.
2.Don’t Let Language Barriers Scare You
Don’t let language barriers scare you when you travel. When I visited Paris, not knowing French was my biggest challenge. Even though I spoke Haitian-Creole fluently, it wasn’t enough. But I discovered that people were friendly and willing to help. If needed, I used hand signals to communicate.
If you’re planning to visit a place where you don’t speak the language, don’t worry. You’ll find ways to communicate, trust me.
You can use tools like Google Translate to understand signs, or apps such as Sygic Travel or Google Maps to plan your sightseeing route.
Here are some useful tips: When I arrive in a new city, I always go to the welcome center or information desk at the airport or train station. I ask for directions to my accommodation or the city center. The staff there usually know the quickest or cheapest ways to get around. Talking to locals who know the area well also helps me get familiar with my surroundings fast. These kiosks often have free maps, suggestions for places to visit, discount codes, and other helpful resources, so make sure to stop by and check them out.
Consider hiring an online language tutor or using language apps to learn some basic phrases. These tools can help you understand the local language better and make your trip more enjoyable. Plus, learning a few key phrases can show the locals that you respect their culture and are making an effort to communicate.
3.Make an Itinerary
When I travel, I find that thorough planning is key, especially when exploring a new destination solo. Planning not only helps you make the most of your time but also ensures a smoother and more enjoyable trip.
Step 1: Research and Prioritize
Before you embark on your journey, take the time to research the top attractions and activities at your destination. Make a list of the things you definitely want to see and do. Consider cultural landmarks, museums, local cuisine, and any special events happening during your visit.
Step 2: Set a Budget
Figure out how much you’re willing to spend on activities, dining, and transportation. This helps you allocate your resources wisely and prevents overspending.
Step 3: Book Flights and Accommodation
Start by booking your flight to a major city closest to your destination. For instance, if you’re heading to Italy, you might book a flight to Rome. From there, plan your transportation to your final destination—whether it’s Florence, Venice, or another city—using trains, buses, or organized tours.
Step 4: Plan Day Trips
Consider taking day trips from your base city to nearby attractions. Using local transportation or joining group tours can be efficient and cost-effective. For example, when you want to visit Rome, you could take a day trip to explore the historic streets of Florence or the romantic canals of Venice.
Step 5: Consider Guided Tours
If you’re unsure where to start with planning activities, sign up for a free guided walking tour upon arrival. Many cities offer these tours, often free or on a donation basis, which not only introduce you to key landmarks but also provide insights from local guides. They can recommend great restaurants, bars, and hidden gems that you might not discover on your own.
Step 6: Flexibility and Exploration
While it’s good to have a structured itinerary, leave room for spontaneity. Allow yourself time to wander and explore off the beaten path. Sometimes the best experiences come from unexpected discoveries.
Step 7: Stay Connected
Keep your loved ones informed of your itinerary and check in with them regularly, especially if you’re traveling alone. Share your accommodation details and any changes in plans for safety purposes.
Step 8: Enjoy the Experience
Lastly, embrace the adventure of solo travel. Use this opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture, meet new people, and create lasting memories. Solo travel allows for personal growth and a deeper understanding of the world around you.
4.Stay Safe While Traveling
Whether you’re traveling solo or with friends, ensuring your safety should be a top priority. Here are some practical tips to help you stay safe during your travels:
Protecting Your Passport
One of the most common concerns is where to keep your passport. While leaving it in your hotel room might seem secure, there’s a risk of theft. Consider keeping it on you in a secure, inconspicuous place such as a travel satchel bag that hangs beside your hip. This way, you can keep it close and easily accessible while remaining vigilant.
Packing Light and Smart
Traveling light not only makes your journey more manageable but also reduces the risk of losing belongings and avoids unnecessary baggage fees. Opt for a backpack and a carry-on suitcase to carry essentials. Here’s a checklist of items to pack for any trip:
- Travel documents (passport, ID, tickets)
- Medications and first aid kit
- Clothing appropriate for the destination and weather
- Toiletries and personal hygiene items
- Chargers and adapters for electronics
- Basic snacks and water bottle
Daytime Sightseeing
Plan most of your sightseeing activities during daylight hours. This allows you to navigate unfamiliar places more safely and confidently. Be mindful of your surroundings and avoid poorly lit or deserted areas, especially at night.
Use of Sunglasses
Wearing sunglasses not only shields your eyes from the sun but also helps you discreetly observe your surroundings. It can also deter unwanted attention by making it harder for strangers to make eye contact with you.
Personal Safety Measures
Consider wearing a ring and mentioning that you are married if you wish to discourage unwanted advances. This simple gesture can help deflect attention and maintain personal boundaries while exploring new places.
Stay Connected
Keep in touch with family or friends back home by regularly updating them on your whereabouts and plans. Share your accommodation details and any changes in your itinerary for added security.
By following these safety tips and remaining aware of your surroundings, you can enjoy your travel experiences with greater peace of mind. Remember, taking precautions enhances your solo travel adventure and ensures a safe and memorable journey. Safe travels!
5.Find Your Happy Medium
If you’re hesitant about traveling alone, consider finding a travel buddy who is comfortable with you exploring solo. Here’s how to strike a balance:
Travel Together, Independently
Partner with a travel companion with the mutual understanding that you don’t have to be joined at the hip. Agree to explore separately on certain days while meeting up for meals or activities you both enjoy.
Swap Stories Over Dinner
After your independent adventures, reconvene for dinner to share stories and highlights from your day. This allows you to maintain individual exploration while still enjoying shared experiences and companionship.
